Upcoming: C-CAP Careers through Culinary Arts Program 20th Anniversary Benefit Honoring Marcus Samuelsson

On Wednesday, February 24th, 2010, C-Cap (Careers through Culinary Arts Program) will host their 20th Anniversary benefit at Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers. It’s one of the city’s best tasting event, and as always, it showcases talented high school students who havebeen trained by top chefs all over the country. Richard Grausman, a cookbook author and educator, started the foundation twenty years ago in New York City.   These aren’t just any students, however; they’re underprivileged and often have few career goals. C-Cap transforms those who want to learn and gives them a culinary education like none other. Those who push through the demanding schedule, critical teachers, and tough culinary competitions receive scholarships to some of the best cooking schools in the country (The Art Institute, CIA, etc.). These students go on to work top restaurants and resorts in the country (Le Bernadin, the Four Seasons, Chanterelle, etc.). And they occupy top spots—Executive Chefs, Executive Sous Chefs, Executive Pastry Chefs—when they complete school. These kids are absolutely amazing, and so are the teachers, as seen in the recent movie Pressure Cooker, produced and directed by one of Grausman’s daughters, Jennifer Grausman.

The Grausmans, whom I know personally, are extremely kind and generous, and host an event not to be forgotten. It’s a walkabout sampling event with unlimited gourmet samples from establishments such as Aquavit, Blue Hill, Daniel, Landmarc, Gotham Bar and Grill, and dozens of others. You’ll also likely spot “celebrity” chefs such as Tom Coicchio, Lydia Bastianach, or even Al Roker.

It’s a delicious evening, but the most important part is that you’re helping a nonprofit provide training, scholoarships, internships, and culinary equipment, and more. Ticket prices are extremely steep, but the donations all go to C-Cap. There are also gift bags and a silent auction with more donated goods (amazing resort getaways; privately catered dinners), and all of the restaurants volunteer their time and dishes. The students are partnered with the head chefs at each tasting station, so you get to see their talent in action. It’s a terrific evening that you truly don’t want to miss, and perhaps that’s why it’s always sold out.
